When I was there (for a very short time), The Russian language teacher got drunk in his office with female students MANY times. The Spanish teacher fled the country down to South America to avoid the Vietnam war. He learned spanish down there and when the war was over and Carter pardoned the cowards in 1977 this teacher came back home and got himself a job at good ole' sewanee teaching spanish. I made a bit of an error when I stated that it was the Spanish teacher who shot himself... It was another long forgotten teacher. I left there after I saw and experienced how piss poor the so called "educators" were. I did a lot of debating in class . . . but most of the other students really didn't bother "dialoguing" with the professors. The main thing I kept trying to explain was that, despite their best efforts to be all ahead-of-the-times, they had been far outstripped [as usual] by the culture, which had, at the time progressed right on over to mysticism, pantheism, and "we are divine" -- which was complete anathema to the assortment of early postmodernists, left-over bitter Marxists, and some dinosaur materialist modernist/rationalists, who were chortling about how much farther advanced they were than the peons out there in non-academia.
I finally gave up . . .


 

2008-07-15 02:59: s.@74.240.246.130 : actually, that school is not full of liberal arts hippies... its very traditional and southern. the "hippie" thing you're talking about is because Sewanee is in the midst of the beautiful outdoors, therefore a lot of students like to hike, camp, raft, etc. they are far from your stereotyped idea of "liberal arts hippies". they wear J Crew and Brooks Brothers to class for Christ's sake...
