I thought Gimli sounded vaguely familiar. I remember seeing the film, "Freefall: Flight 174," with William Devane. An Air Canada Boeing 767, en route from Montreal to Edmonton, ran out of fuel and managed to glide for miles before landing at Gimli.
Mira Bilis, I'll stick to the first method. It's brilliant. I also did it with a translation for a comment to Blanqui. Before, I used to write down the translation on a bit of paper then copy it in my comment. So much easier doing highlighting etc. I'll eventually get this computer lark sorted, with a lot of help from you! LOL!!!!!

By the way MD ... I should have also mentioned that as a 'short cut' to this procedure, you can hi-light the text then press ctrl C to copy ... then to paste the text, press ctrl V. I actually use this method more often. :-)

Mira, I'm so glad I had a moan about it. I really am thrilled to bits to get the original back. I was annoyed that they just dumped the new version on me. But now it's all sorted, thanks to you. Thank goodness you didn't abandon Opentopia a while ago! :))
Mira Bilis02/28/14 16:19
Yay MD!! So glad it worked! :-D As so many people have said on the forums over and over again ... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" ;-)

Mira Bilis, I can't thank you enough. I'm now back to classic Google maps and it's such a relief. I spend quite a bit of time on Google maps but that would have changed if I'd been stuck with the new version.
As for hi-light, copy and paste, I've got it!!!!!!!! I did a few practise runs, reading my notes (YOUR notes) and it's sunk in.
I could do with a potted version Mira Bilis next to my laptop! :))
Mira Bilis02/28/14 05:00
You're welcome MD ... I know how frustrating and downright un-user-friendly some so-called upgrades can be! I shall be holding on to the older version as long as I can. Hope it works for you. :-)
MD02/28/14 01:02
Mira, I've just written down every word in a note book I keep for tips and hints for my laptop. It's no wonder I couldn't hi-light, I was trying to start at the end of the text, not the beginning! I shall be practising that tomorrow. Thank you again.
Mira Bilis02/28/14 00:43
Glad to help MD ... hope it works. :-)
To hi-light text, place your cursor at the beginning of the text, click and hold down the left mouse button, then drag it along the text ... you will see it become hi-lighted. Then with the text hi-lighted, right click anywhere over it and click 'copy' from the drop down menu ... then go up to your address bar, right-click and click 'paste' from the drop down menu.

Mira Bilis, Thank you SOOOOO much. I didn't know how to hi-light etc so I typed it all out, which took an age, and the first thing I saw was that 4 people have commented and 3 of them hate the new Google Maps. I've bookmarked it so that I can go back to it when I'm not too tired to have a go. It IS possible to return to the old style and tomorrow I'm going to attempt to do just that. I won't try it tonight because if it doesn't go smoothly it will wind me up and then I won't get to sleep. As you know, it's gone 12.30am for me. I'm so glad I moaned about it to you. :))

Grrrrr!!! OK ... you're going to have to hi-light, copy and paste that full url MD ... stupid links!!

I use Firefox and if you have the chance to keep the old map, do so. I didn't opt for this new (I just had to delete a naughty word) system. Top left, I get a sizeable box saying "My custom maps" which I don't want and can't get rid of. When I have pegman (as they call him) on the road, the top 2 thirds of monitor is the road, the bottom third is taken up with four pictures and a picture of pegman.
I've just tried to get pegman to go along Silvervagen, Arjeplog and he refuses to go. I've been along that road several times before, with the old system. If this is progress, take me back to the stone age. I don't know what I've done but the print has gone ginormous!

Now the fly has gone.
Now a giant fly has replaced the former giant spider.
Lord, I think that huge spider on the camera right now might be right at home in Lord of the Rings. Or Harry Potter!
LOL Homely ... I'm sure he would feel right at home with all the Nordic inhabitants here. ;)
I thought Gimli was a character in Lord of the Rings...
I didn't realise that Gimli was also known as "New Iceland" because of all the Icelandic settlers there.
