Many old/historical places have strict planning laws which McDonalds have to abide by ... nothing uglier than a McDonalds sticking out like a carbuncle in the middle of a quaint old street. ;)

I have a friend that just came back from Sweden and she showed me a picture of a McDonalds there. It was on a block of cute old shops & McDonalds was in one of those buildings. All it had for a sign was a small McDonalds arch sign attached to the building, she said they almost missed it as they walked by.
