My grandfather would never eat chicken. He said it was the dirtiest creature on this planet. "All they do is peck and eat off the manure pile" he said. He was healthy and never in a hospital till he was near eighty years old.

Mira Bilis, I'd forgotten I'd put that comment!  LOL

Mira Bilis 07/22/14 23:23

LOL MD ... what I meant when I said they don't smell, is because free-range spend most of their time outside in the fresh air, rather than stuck inside like these factory chickens.  Probably still smells I'm sure, but at least outside most of it gets blown away.  :D

MD 07/11/14 22:01

Mira Bilis, chicken shit smells, free-range or not. Maybe free-range doesn't smell so bad as the fumes go up into the atmosphere.  :D

Mira Bilis 07/11/14 21:28

If they were free-range there'd be no nasty smell ... but free-range doesn't equate to profit ... and profit trumps compassion every time.  :/

N Q, thanks for that. I'm glad the lights aren't on all night. It has to smell really, your poor neice!

MD I just came across your 6/27 remark.

We have turkey farms around this area and they smell awful !

They don't leave the lights on at night and in fact the way they catch the grown turkeys for butchering or to take them to market is by waiting till late night and turning the lights on dim, just bright enough so the people can see the turkeys and catch them--that way the turkeys are half asleep when being caught, they tend not to put up as much of a fight that way.

I have a niece who spent one night catching turkeys for butchering, she never went back because she said the smell was so bad and she ruin a pair of shoes walking through the turkey shit :(

Mira Bilis, on about roosting in trees..... our old farmhouse in France had a downstairs and an upstairs barn. There was a plank of wood with batons across it every few inches, leaning at an angle, leading to the upstairs barn. My next door neighbour told me that the chickens used to climb the plank to roost in the upper barn.
