Trix, the funny thing is - my husband actually has hearing impairment, proved by medics and compensation paid, but if I muttered anything derogatory about him he heard every word! As you say, selective hearing.

I'm just watching the highlights of the Monaco Formula 1 qualifying. Monaco is just 34 miles from here. We used to live 80 miles from Monaco and my husband was convinced he could hear the cars revving up. Daft bat!  We were closer to the Paul Ricard ciircuit.

I love Monaco.
